Lay Preachers are individuals who have have a deep background in Christian faith and study, and who have undergone several years of study of exegesis, homeletics and related topics under the supervision of an ordained priest to prepare them to serve effectively as preachers. They are licensed by the Diocese upon the recommendation of their parish priest to preach the Gospel in their church. Lay preachers are especially important in smaller  parishes with part-time priests to ensure that there are regular sermons when a priest is otherwise not present. Lay preachers are usually also licensed as worship leaders and serve as officiant at services other than the Holy Eucharist.
